CATARACT: OPACIFY LENS
Hello my lovely intellectual readers hope all are
fine, thanks for giving your
precious time. This picture is little bit confusing
you but yes it has relevance with the today’s
topic.
Cataract word derived from latin word “Cataracta”
which means water fall as cataract manifested by opacification of lens eye that
appear as seeing through running water.
It is due to deposition of proteinous matter on
lens. Lens of eye, function of which is quite similar to the lens of a camera, it is
biconvex transparent structure that refracts light and we are quite aware if
lens of camera is not clear we can’t have clear images same concept applies
here. Cataract leads to opacity of transparent lens and make the vision
problematic and further leads to complete blindness. It may be unilateral or
bilateral either affecting one eye or both eyes.
It is one of the major cause of blindness all over
the world According to WHO NPCB (National Programme for Control of Blindness
approximately 80% of cases of blindness in India are due to cataract.
Major Types of Cataract:
- 1.Nuclear
cataract which forms in the middle of lens and leads to yellowish or
brownish centre.
- 2.Cortical
Cataract:Wedge shaped opacity in the cortex that is the periphery of the
lens.
- 3.Congenital
cataract refers to opacity of lens present at the time of birth or since
birth.
- 4.Subcapsular
posterior cataract which begin in the posterior region and called
subcapsular as lies beneath the eye.
- 5.Secondary
Cataract It occurs due to secondary effect of drugs, disease and trauma.
Medicines of corticosteroid group are highly responsible for occurrence of
cataract.
Signs sand symptoms:
1.
• Clouding and
blurred vision
2.
• Sensitivity to
light and glare
3.
• Halos around
light
4.
• Need of more
light for reading and other activities
5.
• Difficulty to
see in dim light or night vision
6.
• Double vision
in single eye
Factors which may aggravate the progression of
cataract:
1.Smoking
2.Long exposure to sun light (UV radiation)
3.Steroids intake for long duration.
4.Diabetes mellitus.
Treatment
and Management.
In most of the cases treatment in cataract is
preventive like use of antioxidants, Vitamin C can slow down the progression. Few
ayurvedic formulations do claim to treat but actually they slow down the
process. Patanjali eyedrop is really
benefitting people which I personally observed.
In chronic or severe cases cataract removal surgery is the last resort along with lens transplant.
Take home message is If there is sudden change in
vision or problem in reading its time to consult the ophthalmologist. Treatment
of cataract may be surgery or medicines depending on the stage of cataract so
better to visit the eye expert as soon as you feel the trouble in vision.
