Hello every one hope all are healthy and safe because of this corona crisis every one is dealing with so much uncertainty whether it be I am here with the role of vitamin D in our life.
Vitamin D refers to group of lipid soluble vitamins also known as Calciferols .Vitamin D1, D2 and D3 are its types. Vitamin D also known as sun shine vitamin. Sunlight is the most important source as it get naturally produced by skin on exposure to sunlight.

Supplements of Calcium in combination with Vitamin D3 are also available in market for the people can't avail the natural sunlight or going through treatment for fracture etc.
Exposure of body to morning sunlight especially before 10 am is considered best for the body as harmful UV content is less in morning sunlight.
Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption in body. Without vitamin D whatever be calcium intake it won't be useful . This is what the primary role most of us are aware i.e maintaining bone health prevent bone and muscles associated disorders in the body. You might have seen or heard if a baby on birth is having neonatal jaundice i.e increased bilirubin . Mild jaundice can be treated only by exposure to morning sun light for 15-20 minutes as it is helpful in breakdown of bilirubin.
But what we mostly are not aware is its proven role in prevention of cell growth in cancer, autoimmune disease as well as maintaining eye health. Vitamin D deficiency had been found as the predisposition of Diabetes. Research showed that people living near the equator were found less prone to diabetes.
Sun light is still the richest and cheapest source of Vitamin D. Exposing body to MED Minimum erythemal dose that is slight redness in skin appear is equivalent to 10-25k IU taken orally.
Milk and milk product,fish ,egg yolks,beef and mushroom are other rich sources of Vitamin D.
It had also proven effects in treatment of following ocular complications.
- AMD is the Age related Macular Degeneration in layman language it can be described as partial blindness occuring in elderly age. Researches proved women taking Vitamin D supplement were found less prone to AMD compared to women not taking adequate Vitamin D
- Diabetic Retinopathy : Vitamin D deficiency found to factor associated with Diabetic Retinopathy which is damage of retina .
- Dry Eye which is most prevalent under estimated problem of eye i.e lack of moisture and lubrication by lacrimal gland causing constant irritation and foreign body sensation. Dry eye also refers to keratoconjuctivitis sicca and dysfunctional tear syndrome. Now a days increased screen time whether it be phones or lap tops has increased dry eye problem.
Its good to know that we can even fight with this Corona crisis too with the help of this miraculous vitamin D as it got proved in many research studies, people having high intake vitamin D were less prone to this infection. Even clinicians are using sun exposure as the part of treatment of corona infection and recovery rate increased and recovery time got reduced
